The family

A shared family dream.

In 2005, Bruno and Mariella Fina planted a shared family dream on a small hill above Marsala. They restored an old farmhouse in Contrada Bausa and planted new vineyards around it. Twenty years on, their children Marco, Sergio and Federica work alongside them.

From the start the family chose organic farming, working without synthetic pesticides or chemicals, both to protect the land and to put the quality of the fruit first. The vineyards are certified organic.

2005

The year Bruno and Mariella Fina planted their first vineyards above Marsala. Twenty years on, the whole family works at the estate.

Sea, salt and sun

Contrada Bausa sits north-east of Marsala, overlooking the sea and the salt marshes of the Stagnone Islands Nature Reserve. The vines live with strong Sicilian sun and a salty wind off the Mediterranean, and you can taste it in the wines: bright, savoury whites and generous, warm reds.

The family grows Sicily’s own grapes, Grillo, Zibibbo, Nero d’Avola and Perricone, alongside international varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Traminer, Merlot and Cabernet. In this setting the international grapes take on a distinctly Sicilian accent, with softness, flavour and aromatic richness.

Much of the fruit is picked by hand, from the coastal Grillo vineyards facing the island of Mozia to the Chardonnay harvested at the end of August and the late-harvest Grillo left to dry on the vine.

An old farmhouse, a modern cellar

The winery is housed in the restored farmhouse, fitted out with modern equipment: solar panels for power, its own bottling and microfiltration line, and a temperature-controlled barrique cellar. Whites are mostly made in stainless steel to keep them fresh and precise, while the more structured wines spend time in oak.

Bruno counts the great winemaker Giacomo Tachis, the man behind Sassicaia and Tignanello, as his teacher. Caro Maestro (“dear teacher”) is his tribute to him.
