Piazzo.Three generations of Nebbiolo in the Langhe.
A family estate on the edge of Alba, with more than 70 hectares across the Langhe and Roero and a Barolo and Barbaresco range built on old Nebbiolo vines.

The family
Started by Armando and Gemma.
Piazzo was founded in the 1960s by Armando Piazzo and his wife, Gemma Veglia. Armando began by working his own land around Alba and Treiso, and Gemma invested in more vineyards, with a particular eye for Nebbiolo. That focus still defines the estate: today around 60% of its vineyards are planted with the grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco.
The winery sits at San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, a few kilometres from the centre of Alba. It is now run by their daughter, Marina Piazzo, with her husband Franco Allario, an agronomist who looks after the vineyards, and their sons Simone and Marco, who work in the cellar alongside oenologist Stefano Giordano.
A family venture, harvest to harvest
Piazzo describes its approach simply: “No secret recipe, just an authentic and dynamic family venture that evolves from harvest to harvest.” The style is traditional and rooted in the Langhe, but open to a more contemporary touch, with a growing focus on sustainability in the vineyard.
The aim is wines that are ready to enjoy a few years after the harvest, yet have the structure to age for decades. Across more than 70 hectares in the communes of Alba, Treiso, Novello, Mango, Neviglie and Guarene, the family produces around 400,000 bottles a year, from Barolo and Barbaresco to Alta Langa sparkling, Roero Arneis, Barbera, Dolcetto and Moscato d’Asti.

Three sites behind the wines we import
Each of the Piazzo wines on our list starts with a specific piece of ground, and the family’s own vineyard notes explain a great deal about how they taste.
- Sottocastello di Novello — 450 metres up in Novello, in the Barolo zone, facing south-east on a mix of marl and calcareous clay. Only old Nebbiolo vines are planted here, and the site is chosen for powerful, austere wines that need time to show their full range.
- Pajorè — a west-facing vineyard at 250 metres, close to the winery, on calcareous clay. With vines more than fifty years old, it is one of the oldest on the estate, known for well-defined tannins and wines where finesse comes before power.
- Rocche Massalupo — around 200 metres, facing south-west on calcareous marl, with vines averaging 25 years. It gives delicate yet complex Nebbiolo with striking freshness, and forms part of the Argè blend with the Rizzi and Nervo vineyards.
