Arla Foods UK traces its roots back to 1864, when George Barham founded the Express Country Milk Supply Company near London’s Kings Cross, and to 1881, with the origins of Sweden’s Stora Arla Gård and the cooperative dairies of Scandinavia. Since then, Arla has invested heavily in modern, technologically advanced dairies, including Stourton and Lockerbie, streamlined operations, and expanded production to offer a full range of fresh dairy products, from milk and cream to cottage cheese and crème fraîche. Today, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Arla Foods amba — one of Europe’s largest dairy cooperatives with over 9,400 farmer-owners and operations across seven countries — Arla sources approximately 8.4 billion litres of milk annually, employs 16,500 people worldwide, and delivers high-quality dairy products to more than 100 countries, all while supporting its farmer-owners, advancing sustainable practices, and growing its iconic brands in the UK market.
